A Digest of Recent Corporate News in Distance Education

- eCornell, Cornell University's newly-opened online-learning subsidiary, has chosen WebCT to provide the platform for a certificate program in human-resources studies. The program debuts with the start of its first class today.

- Lethbridge Community College, in Alberta, Canada, will provide interactive classrooms for its online classes with software from TutorsEdge, Inc.

- The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, which offers business degrees, will use software from Centra to develop a series of online classes and "virtual office hours." The school hopes to use the technology to connect students at its main campus in Philadelphia and those at its new branch in San Francisco.

- Seventeen institutions will provide courses to the United Auto Workers-Ford University Online, which allows factory workers to take college courses through distance learning while working full-time. Participating institutions include Kansas State University, the University of Maryland University College, and the University of Toledo.
