Frequently Asked Questions

Recruitment Advertising

Billing

1. Do I have to prepay for my ad or will I be billed?

Online job postings. When you place an online job posting (web ad) through ChronicleVitae.com/Employers, you must pay for the job posting by credit card or -- if you have established an account with The Chronicle -- purchase order during the purchase process. If this is the first time you are purchasing an online job posting through the ChronicleVitaesite, you must pay by credit card.

Line ads. When you place a line ad through ChronicleVitae.com/Employers, you may pay by credit card or -- if you have established an account with The Chronicle -- request an invoice. First time advertisers will be required to prepay after the final price is established and will be contacted by an ad rep for prepayment.

Display ads. When you request a quote for a display ad, The Chronicle will bill you (send you an invoice) when the final cost is determined and approved. First time advertisers will be required to prepay after the final price is established and will be contacted by an ad rep for prepayment. The cost of a display ad depends on the size of the ad. When you request a quote for a boxed (print) ad, a Chronicle sales representative will work with you to design your ad and provide a price quote. Once the design has been finalized, you'll receive a proof of your ad with a confirmation of the final cost.

You may pay invoices on our Pay an Invoice page.

2.  Is the price quote you gave me in U.S. dollars? Do I have to pay with U.S. currency?
Yes. All prices we quote are in U.S. currency. For all ads, The Chronicle only accepts payment in U.S. currency.

3.  Do I need a purchase order to pay for my ad?
If you choose not to prepay for your ad with a credit card, the purchase order number is required to place your ad and receive an invoice to pay later. Please note that prepayment is required for first time advertiser.

Logging in to ChronicleVitae

4.  I subscribe to The Chronicle of Higher Education, but my Chronicle user name and password don't work when I try to log in to ChronicleVitae. Why?

5.  I'm not able to log in to Chronicle Careers.
Make sure you have created an account at Chronicle Careers (careers.chronicle.com), The Chronicle's self-service website for placing job ads. Don't try to log in on Chronicle Careers with the user name and password that you use on The Chronicle of Higher Education web site, chronicle.com; log-in credentials are not shared between the two sites.

Also, don't try to log in with a current or former co-worker's user name and password; you need your own account. For more help, contact The Chronicle at 202-466-1050 or jobs@chronicle.com.

Your ad and any associated enhancements will be canceled immediately. Your ad's status will display as "canceled." No refunds are given for canceled ads. If you would like to cancel an ad that has not yet started, contact The Chronicle at 202-466-1050 or jobs@chronicle.com.

8.  Can I renew an online job posting?

If you are an agency rep or recruiter, and you placed the original ad for a client, you can renew the ad only for the same client.

If the original ad is still live, the renewed ad will be in a pending status. When the original ad expires, the renewed ad will go live. If you renew an ad that has already expired, the renewed ad will go live on the site immediately.

Renewed ads are assigned new order numbers. Both original and renewed ads can be viewed in Manage My Ads.

Placing Print Ads

9.  I'm using the ChronicleVitae website to place my print ad. There is a section on the form that offers several choices for how candidates should apply for the position. Will the option I choose appear in my print ad?

No. This section of the form determines whether or not the online version of your ad should display an "Apply Now" button; it does not display in your print ad. You must include "how to apply" information in the text of your print ad for interested candidates who see the ad in print. If you are uploading a finished boxed ad as a PDF file, be sure the information is included in the ad.

If you are having The Chronicle design your boxed ad, or you are placing a line ad, include "how to apply" information in the text of your ad, which is entered on the form in the "Position Description" field.

10.  What are The Chronicle's print issue dates and deadlines?

View The Chronicle's issue dates and deadlines here.

11.  How do I determine the cost of my boxed ad?

The cost of a boxed ad depends on the size of the ad. When you request a quote for a boxed ad, a Chronicle sales representative will work with you to design your ad and provide a price quote. Once the design has been finalized, you'll receive a proof of your ad with a confirmation of the final cost.

12.  Is my print ad also posted online? For how long?

Yes, an online version of your print ad will appear on The Chronicle's jobs site for 60 days.

13.  Can the online version of my print ad contain different text?

No; the content of the online version must be identical to the content of the print ad. The content of boxed ads may be reformatted slightly to display correctly online. Line ads look the same online as they do in print. For more information, contact our recruitment advertising team at 202-466-1050 or email jobs@chronicle.com.

14.  Is there a multiple publication discount?

A multiple publication discount can be earned if your boxed ad is running in both The Chronicle of Higher Education and our sister publication, The Chronicle of Philanthropy. The discount is 10% off the combined display rate for each publication. The multiple publication discount is not available for online job postings or line ads.
