Can you write a winning job ad?

Creating an effective recruitment ad that will attract the right candidate is perhaps one of the biggest challenges you face. In just a few paragraphs, a successful ad needs to convey the mission of the institution, list the essential functions of the position, communicate the experience necessary for the job, attract a passionate candidate, weed out the wrong candidate, provide the right amount of contact information, and most importantly – get noticed! All in just a few paragraphs. It can be a daunting task.

So, we’d like to share a few great tips to help you write a winning ad that will attract the best candidates.

 

1.  Think of the ad as a marketing spot.

If you had only 30 seconds to entice and excite a candidate, what would you tell them? Don't just give a laundry list of essential job duties describe what makes your workplace unique and lively.

 

2.  It's not only about passion.

Yes, you want a person who cares deeply about your mission and goals, but don’t forget to outline the skill set the successful candidate must have to move your institution forward.

 

3.  Be specific about the type of person you're looking for.

If you're looking for someone to develop research from scratch, mention that in the ad. Ask about accomplishments, not just years of experience – you may turn off candidates who have done amazing work in a limited amount of time.

 

4.  Be realistic.

Don't be overzealous with the skills or qualifications you're asking for. You could discourage qualified candidates if you have unrealistic expectations.
