
In 1967, as U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War expanded, student protests gained more and more attention. Also reaching The Chronicle’s front page on October 26 was coverage of the American Council on Education’s 50th annual meeting, where college administrators were apparently offended by a graduate-student panelist’s wearing a green turtleneck sweater rather than a white shirt and tie. “Did you see what that kid was wearing?” asked one dean. “It was disrespectful.”
