Colleges started the fall term amid portents of conflict on campuses across the country. Rifts among students and professors over politics, culture, and scholarly disciplines were many and varied. There was even disagreement over the extent of the disagreements. “I feel sorry for the poor bastards who’ve got to run the colleges this year,” a federal education official told The Chronicle.
