
Passage of the federal law that became known as Ferpa was major news in October. As the complex terms of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act became part of the fabric of campus operations over the years, its effect has been not so much to give students access to their records as to enable colleges to keep those records private. In other news (with a recent echo), “political interference in academic decisions” at the University of Texas was alleged in the firing of the president by the chancellor.
