In a six-page report, The Chronicle visited four campuses — the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, the University of Texas at Austin, Pennsylvania State University, and Oberlin College — to describe what has come to be called the racial climate. We found, among other things, that “many white students believe that racial equality has already been achieved in society, and they question the validity of black students’ concerns.” The problem of race relations on campus has persisted, of course, and we have continued to cover it, most recently in an article on activism regarding issues of tenure.
