
W hen Drew Gilpin Faust (above) became head of the American Historical Association’s professional division, which reviews ethics violations, she found herself amid more than a few bitter debates within a newly diverse membership. “No one is happy,” she told The Chronicle. Among the issues were not just traditional ones, like plagiarism, but now allegations of sexual harassment, racial and age discrimination, and unfair hiring and promotion practices as well. Ms. Faust, a historian at the University of Pennsylvania at the time, presumably found the experience useful for the job she got 13 years later, as president of Harvard University.
