2011: A Test of Faith in Happy Valley

October 16, 2016
2011: A Test of Faith in Happy Valley 1

The news, announced on a Wednesday night during the football season, was both sudden and perhaps inevitable: After several emergency sessions of the Board of Trustees, Penn State’s longtime football coach, Joe Paterno, and its president, Graham B. Spanier, had been dismissed, as the police investigated accusations of serial sexual abuse of children by an assistant coach. The scandal raised questions about institutional oversight and failures of communication in a program long praised for its honorable record. The assistant coach was found guilty and jailed, but litigation against officials continues, as have repercussions from the case.
