32 Americans Are Chosen as Rhodes Scholars for 2014

The 32 American winners of Rhodes Scholarships for 2014 include two scholars from institutions that have never before had a student win the prestigious award: Smith College, in Massachusetts, and New York University’s Abu Dhabi campus.

The American winners, announced on Saturday, were chosen from 16 districts across the United States. A list of the new scholars, by district, is available on the trust’s website, along with profiles of each winner. They are among some 80 new scholars chosen each year from more than a dozen nations around the world.

The scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of Cecil Rhodes, the British industrialist and colonial leader in South Africa. They provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford, in England. The average value of the scholarships is estimated at $50,000 a year to each recipient, though the actual amount varies by the field and degree chosen by each winner.

The new scholars will enter Oxford in October 2014. Their scholarships will be provided by the trust in partnership with new benefactors, including the McCall MacBain Foundation. The 110-year-old trust kicked off a fund-raising campaign for its second century this fall with the announcement of an initial gift of £75-million from the foundation, which was established by the Canadian businessman John McCall MacBain and his wife, Marcy.
