Many of the institutions with the highest number of noninstructional staff members per 1,000 students are medical colleges or health-science centers, or comprise them. Private nonprofit institutions on the list had missions more varied than those of public ones. Among the private institutions were liberal-arts institutions like Amherst College and Bowdoin College.

Note: The number of full-time non-instructional staff members excludes medical-staff members, like doctors, and employees of hospitals affiliated with the institutions. Ratios were calculated based on fall-2015 enrollment of all full-time and part-time students. Institutions with fewer than 500 students and all for-profit institutions were excluded from the table. The number of staff members per 1,000 students is greater than the actual number of staff members in cases in which the institution has fewer than 1,000 students.
