At just two universities did more than two-thirds of full-time instructional staff members with faculty status hold the rank of full professor in the fall of 2016. Ten of the four-year public institutions with the highest percentages of full professors were in California, three were in Minnesota, and two each in Connecticut and Wisconsin. Among the top 25 private nonprofit institutions, five each were in California and Massachusetts, and two each were in Indiana, Rhode Island, and Texas. Faculty members at private nonprofit institutions were slightly more likely to have reached the rank of professor by the fall of 2016 than were those at public institutions.

Note: Only institutions classified as doctoral, master’s, and baccalaureate (but not baccalaureate/associate) under the 2015 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education are included in this analysis. Institutions with fewer than 100 faculty members and those without tenure systems were excluded. Employees considered in the analysis were full-time instructional staff members with faculty status in the fall of 2016. Instructors, lecturers, and those with no academic rank who were not accorded faculty status by their institutions were excluded. Percentages are rounded, but institutions were ranked before rounding. Questions or comments on the Almanac should be sent to the Almanac editor.
