Among the 10 doctoral institutions with the highest average salaries for associate professors, Harvard University was the only one where women earned more than men did. In the same group, the University of Pennsylvania had the largest pay gap between women and men. At master’s and baccalaureate institutions, women’s median average salaries were much closer to men’s than at doctoral institutions.

Note: Figures are based on data from all Title IV-participating, degree-granting institutions in the United States. The data cover full-time, nonmedical instructional staff members (who are either engaged primarily in instruction or are engaged in instruction combined with research and/or public service) at the rank of associate professor as of November 1, 2015. Tied institutions are listed alphabetically. Average salaries are adjusted to a standard nine-month work year. Institutions with more than zero but fewer than three associate professors of a single gender were excluded. Baccalaureate/associate colleges were excluded. Categories are based on the 2015 Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education. See The Chronicle’s complete database of faculty salaries at data.chronicle.com.
