AAU Members With the Greatest Diversity Among Tenure-Track Hires on the Instructional Staff, Fall 2015

By  Chronicle Staff
April 30, 2017

Among the 60 U.S. members of the Association of American Universities, the University of California at Santa Barbara hired the highest percentage of women as full-time tenure-track faculty members whose primary role was instruction in the fall of 2015, and the California Institute of Technology hired the lowest percentage. Only seven AAU universities in the United States hired American Indian instructional tenure-track faculty members that fall. Nineteen of the 60 institutions hired no African-American tenure-track faculty members as part of the full-time instructional staff, and 16 hired no Hispanics for those roles. The AAU is an invitation-only organization of comprehensive research universities.

Note: Percentages for women are based on all new tenure-track hires of faculty members involved primarily in instruction; percentages for underrepresented minority groups (American Indians, blacks, and Hispanics) are based on figures that exclude new hires whose race or ethnicity was unknown as well as nonresident aliens. The only universities for which the race or ethnicity of more than 22 percent of new tenure-track faculty members was unknown were Brandeis University, with 67 percent unknown; the University of Southern California, with 63 percent unknown; and Rutgers University at New Brunswick, with 34 percent unknown. Figures for ethnic and racial groups that are not defined as “underrepresented” (Asians, Native Hawaiians, whites, and two or more races) are not shown. The table excludes data about the hiring of tenured faculty members, of faculty members not on the tenure track, and of staff whose primary roles are research or public service. It also excludes the two Canadian members of the AAU.
