* These institutions did not list any figures for serial titles in the Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System and were given an opportunity to supply figures directly to The Chronicle, which a few of them did. Columbia Libraries reported that it no longer tracks the totals of serial subscriptions. Columbia Libraries no longer tracks the number of serials subscriptions. King’s College, in Pennsylvania, reported that, though it does make nearly 80,000 e-serial titles available to its library users through individual databases and aggregations like Ebscohost, those titles are not counted in the Ipeds comparison data because they are not listed in the online catalog. Montana State University at Bozeman provided a total for serial titles to The Chronicle but did not have a breakdown of physical versus electronic serials. University of Iowa Libraries reported that 2016-17 figures were unavailable because the library system migrated to a new data system that year.

Note: Academic libraries at institutions that are eligible to participate in federal Title IV financial-aid programs and that spent at least $300,000 on continuing subscriptions in 2016-17 were included in this analysis. “Continuing commitments to subscriptions” covers payments for publications issued in successive parts, like periodicals, newspapers, annual reports and yearbooks, and proceedings. The numbers of physical and electronic serial titles are determined by counting only those periodicals that are accessible through the library’s catalog or discovery system. Electronic serials are periodical publications that are published in digital form to be displayed on a computer screen. Open-access titles are included if the individual titles are searchable through the library’s catalog or discovery system, except that e-serial titles from HathiTrust, the Center for Research Libraries, Internet Archive, and similar collections are not counted unless the library owns the digitized item and it is accessible under current copyright law. Colleges that do not report any print and/or serial titles may make their serial titles available by means that make them fall outside the definition of the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Educational Data System, or IPEDS, such as through links in individual databases or through aggregated research platforms like Ebscohost. Questions or comments on the Chronicle List should be sent to Ruth Hammond.
