CHIEF EXECUTIVES

Appointments

David Faigman was appointed chancellor and dean of the University of California Hastings College of Law. He previously held the roles in an interim capacity.

Barbara Gaba was appointed president of Atlantic Cape Community College. Ms. Gaba, current provost and associate vice president for academic affairs at Union County College, in New Jersey, will start on January 30.

Allana Hamilton, vice president for academic affairs at Northeast State Community College, was named president of Jackson State Community College. Both institutions are in Tennessee.

Timothy Houlihan, provost at St. Francis College, in New York, was named interim president of the college. He takes over from Brendan J. Dugan, who died on December 18.

Timothy Karas was appointed president of the College of Alameda. Mr. Karas has served at the college since 2014 as its vice president for instruction.

Larissa Littleton-Steib, vice chancellor for work-force development and technical education at Delgado Community College, was selected to serve as chancellor of Baton Rouge Community College.

Christine Pharr, vice president for alumnae and donor relations at the College of St. Mary, in Nebraska, will become president of Mount Mary University, in Wisconsin, in July. She will succeed Eileen Schwalbach.

Neville Pinto, acting president at the University of Louisville, was appointed president of the University of Cincinnati. He will start in February. Mr. Pinto joined the University of Louisville in 2011 as engineering dean, after 26 years at Cincinnati.

Bryan Reece, vice president for instruction at Crafton Hills College, was named president of Norco College. Both institutions are in California.

Andy Tompkins, who retired as president of the Kansas Board of Regents in June 2015, was appointed interim president of Fort Hays State University.

Flora Tydings was named chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents system. She will take over from David Gregory, the system’s interim chancellor, in February. Ms. Tydings is president of Chattanooga State Community College.

Resignations

Beth Dinndorf, president of Columbia College, in South Carolina, plans to step down on June 30.

Retirements

Ann Britt, president of Martin Community College, in North Carolina, plans to retire in March after nearly 17 years at the helm.

George Harpster Jr., president of Shippensburg University, in Pennsylvania, will retire on January 20 because of family health issues.

Pam Shockley-Zalabak, who has served as chancellor of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs for over 15 years, plans to retire in February. During her tenure, the university saw a 75-percent increase in student enrollment.

Philip Williams, president of McNeese State University, in Louisiana, plans to retire on June 30.

Tom Christensen, a professor in the department of physics and energy science and co-director of the UCCSTeach program, to provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Debra Larson, dean of the College of Engineering at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, to provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University at Chico.

Valentina Purtell, interim provost, to provost of the School of Continuing Education at North Orange County Community College District.

Elizabeth Throop, acting provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin at Platteville, to provost and vice president for academic affairs at Frostburg State University.

Ching-Hua Wang, dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences at Dominican University of California, to provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State University at Sacramento.

Kevin Whitaker, interim provost, to executive vice president and provost at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.

Resignations

Paul D’Anieri, provost of the University of California at Riverside, says he will step down from that post at the end of the academic year. In a message to the faculty and staff, he cited faculty concerns about his leadership style. Mr. D’Anieri will return to his faculty appointment in political science.

Keith Todd, chief executive of the Oregon Health & Science University Foundation, has resigned for personal reasons. The foundation raised more than $1.4 billion under his tenure.

Chuck Ross will direct the University of Vermont’s Extension, part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Mr. Ross, who will start on January 30, is currently secretary of the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets. He previously served as state director and senior adviser under U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy for 16 years.

Phyllis Wise, a former chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a professor of molecular and integrative physiology there, will start as chief executive of the Colorado Longitudinal Study in February. The goal of that project is to analyze health-related behaviors and outcomes.

Resignations

Molly Corbett Broad, president of the American Council on Education, will step down on October 31. She is the first woman to lead the organization, which she has guided for nine years.

Retirements

Julia Lopez, chief executive of the College Futures Foundation, plans to retire at the end of June.

DEATHS

E.R. Braithwaite, the Guyanese author known for his novel To Sir, With Love, died on December 12 in Rockville, Md. He was 104. Mr. Braithwaite taught English at Howard University and other institutions.

Mary Doyle, 73, former law dean at the University of Miami, died on December 14.

Sidney Drell, 90, professor emeritus of theoretical physics at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory at Stanford University, died on December 21 in Palo Alto, Calif.

Brendan Dugan, 69, president of St. Francis College (N.Y.), died on December 18.

Grace Mary Ederer, 97, former medical director of clinical microbiology and professor of laboratory medicine and pathology at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on December 15.

John Edmunds, former dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences and former professor of American history at the University of South Carolina Upstate, died on December 20. Mr. Edmunds joined the university when it was founded in 1967 and worked there for 43 years. He was the first professor hired by the university.

Ned Goldwasser, 97, former vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor emeritus of physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, died on December 14.

Alice Manicur, who retired as vice president emerita for student and educational services at Frostburg State University, died on January 2. Ms. Manicur was the university’s first dean of students and was the first woman to serve as president of Naspa — Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.

Jerald Carter Walker, 78, former president and chancellor of Oklahoma City University, died on December 24 in Tulsa. Mr. Walker, who held office for 18 years, was the university’s longest-serving president.
