Appointments

Ajay Nair, senior vice president and dean of campus life at Emory University, will become president of Arcadia University, in Pennsylvania, in April. He will succeed Nicolette DeVille Christensen, who stepped down last June. George Hanks Brown is serving as interim president.

Peter Provenzano Jr. will become president at Oakland Community College, in Michigan.

Peter Provenzano Jr., interim chancellor and former vice chancellor for administrative services at Oakland Community College, in Michigan, was appointed to the position permanently. His predecessor, Timothy Meyer, was dismissed in May.

Appointments

Ajay Nair, senior vice president and dean of campus life at Emory University, will become president of Arcadia University, in Pennsylvania, in April. He will succeed Nicolette DeVille Christensen, who stepped down last June. George Hanks Brown is serving as interim president.

Peter Provenzano Jr., interim chancellor and former vice chancellor for administrative services at Oakland Community College, in Michigan, was appointed to the position permanently. His predecessor, Timothy Meyer, was dismissed in May.

Stuart Rayfield, interim president of Bainbridge State College since June 2016, was appointed to be interim president of Gordon State College, beginning January 1. Max Burns, who had led Gordon State since 2012, retired on December 31.

Lori Sundberg, president of Carl Sandburg College since 2010, will become president of Kirkwood Community College, in Iowa, on August 1. She will succeed Mick Starcevich, who has led the university since 2005 and who plans to retire in June.

Framroze Virjee, executive vice chancellor and general counsel at California State University, was appointed to be interim president of the system’s campus at Fullerton, beginning January 1. He is replacing Mildred García, who is stepping down to lead the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

Brad Williams, vice president for student services at Oklahoma State University at Oklahoma City, was named president, effective January 1. Natalie Shirley, who had been president since 2011, stepped down on December 31. She will lead the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, in Oklahoma City.

Resignations

Sam Olens, president of Kennesaw State University since November 2016, says he will resign on February 15.

Retirements

Mary Ellen Mazey, president of Bowling Green State University since 2011, retired from that post on December 31 and became president emeritus. Provost and Senior Vice President Rodney Rogers will serve as interim president.

Rosie Phillips Bingham, a professor of counseling psychology at the University of Memphis, will be the 2018 president-elect of the American Psychological Association. She will serve as the association’s president in 2019.

David Burge, vice president for enrollment management at George Mason University, has assumed the presidency of the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

Denise Catalano, associate professor in the department of rehabilitation and health-services at the University of North Texas, was elected president of the National Council on Rehabilitation Education. She also serves as graduate coordinator of her department’s rehabilitation-counseling program.

David Clark, senior vice president for health and medical sciences at Elsevier, has become managing director for the Oxford University Press’s academic division. He succeeds Tim Barton, who worked at the press for 25 years.

Lorne W. Craner, former assistant U.S. Secretary of State for democracy, human rights, and labor, has become president of American Councils for International Education.

Linda Durant, senior vice president for university advancement at Widener University, will become vice president for development for the Council for Advancement and Support of Education on February 5.

Jocelyn Harmon, chief philanthropy officer at the nonprofit organization Prosperity Now, has become vice president for development, marketing, and communications at Achieving the Dream, a network that promotes student success at community colleges.

Tania Munz, vice president for research and scholarship at the Linda Hall Library, in Kansas City, Mo., has become vice president for scholarly programs at the National Humanities Center.

Andrew Phelps, a professor and founder and director of the Center for Media, Arts, Games, Interaction and Creativity at the Rochester Institute of Technology, was named president of the Higher Education Video Game Alliance, a professional association of video-game scholars and programs at colleges.

Félix V. Matos Rodriguez, president at City University of New York Queens College, was elected as board chair for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

M. Roy Wilson, president at Wayne State University, was named chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges Board of Directors. His term will run until November 2018.

John R. Agar, professor of reconstructive sciences at the University of Connecticut’s Health Center School of Dentistry, received the Distinguished Service Award from the American College of Prosthodontists.

Stacy Hawkins, an associate professor of law at Rutgers University at Camden whose work focuses on employment and diversity, will receive the 2017 Derrick A. Bell Award from the Association of American Law Schools in January. The award honors a junior faculty member who has made an extraordinary contribution to legal education, the legal system, or social justice.

Kelli McMahan, associate clinical professor and coordinator of outdoor education and leadership at Baylor University, received the 2017 Paul K. Petzoldt Leadership Award in honor of her contributions to the field of outdoor leadership.

Suzanne Nielsen, professor of food science at Purdue University, received one of two 2017 U.S. Department of Agriculture National Excellence in College and University Teaching Awards for Food and Agricultural Sciences. The other winner was Ann Marie VanDerZanden, associate provost for academic programs and a professor of horticulture at Iowa State University.

Lisa Summer, director of music therapy at Anna Maria College, received a 2017 Award of Merit from the American Music Therapy Association.

Deaths

Joan Marie Fagerlie, 87, a retired research librarian at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on December 6. Ms. Fagerlie was active in the American Numismatic Society, which is dedicated to the study of coins.

Norman White, an associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at Saint Louis University, died of a heart attack on December 6. He was 64. Mr. White was a founder of Shut It Down: Addressing the School-to-Prison Pipeline, a local organization that trains teachers on issues of racial bias, inequality, and childhood trauma.
