Appointments
L. Joy Gates Black, vice chancellor for academic affairs and student success for the Tarrant County College District, in Fort Worth, Tex., was named president of Delaware County Community College. She will be the first African-American and the first woman to lead the college and will succeed Jerry Parker, who is retiring after 14 years in office.
Sylvia Mathews Burwell, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services under President Barack Obama, has been named president of American University. Ms. Burwell will be the first woman to lead the university. She will start in June.
Timothy Caboni, vice chancellor for public affairs at the University of Kansas, was named president of Western Kentucky University. He will succeed Gary Ransdell, who is retiring after 20 years at the helm. Mr. Caboni will start in July.
Lorrie Clemo was named president of D’Youville College, in Buffalo, N.Y. Ms. Clemo, a provost and vice president for academic affairs at the State University of New York College at Oswego, has been on leave serving as director of the U.S. Department of Education’s First in the World Program, which seeks to increase degree completion among minority and low-income students. She will succeed Sister Denise Roche, who has retired after 37 years in office.
Laura Douglas, provost for Des Moines Area Community College’s Urban campus, was appointed president of Bristol Community College. She will replace John Sbrega, who will retire in August after 17 years in office.
Joseph Jones, vice rector at Forman Christian College, in Lahore, Pakistan, was named president of Fresno Pacific University. He was previously provost and a professor of justice and community development at North Park University.
Cristle Collins Judd, senior program officer for higher education and scholarship in the humanities at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, was appointed president of Sarah Lawrence College. She will succeed Karen Lawrence, who will step down in July. Ms. Judd was previously dean of academic affairs and a professor of music at Bowdoin College.
Geoffrey Mearns, president of Northern Kentucky University, was named president of Ball State University. He will take over from Terry King, who has served as interim president since President Paul Ferguson’s resignation last year after just 18 months in office.
David Munson Jr., former dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, was named president of the Rochester Institute of Technology. Mr. Munson will succeed Bill Destler, who has served as president since 2007.
Wayne Riley was named president of the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. He is a clinical professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University and former president of Meharry Medical College. He will take office in April.
Retirements
Msgr. Franklyn Casale has announced that he will retire as president of St. Thomas University in January of next year. Monsignor Casale has led the university for more than 20 years and is its longest-serving president.
Mick Starcevich, president of Kirkwood Community College, plans to retire next year. He has led the college for 12 years. During his tenure, the college saw an increase in enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.
