Chief executives

Appointments

Jeffrey Allen, a career-management consultant in Minnesota, is the new president of Adler Graduate School.

C. Mauli Agrawal, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at San Antonio, will become chancellor of the University of Missouri at Kansas City, on June 20.

Lawrence S. Bacow, leader in residence at the Center for Public Leadership in the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, president emeritus of Tufts University, and former chancellor of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will become president of Harvard on July 1. He will succeed Drew Gilpin Faust, who has led Harvard since 2007 and plans to step down in June.

Alison Davis-Blake, a professor of management at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor who was dean of its Ross School of Business from 2011 to 2016, will become president of Bentley University on July 1. She will succeed Gloria Cordes Larson, who plans to step down in June.

Jane Hulon, vice president of the Copiah-Lincoln Community College’s Wesson Campus, will become president of that campus on July 1. She will succeed Ronnie Nettles, who has been at the helm since 2008 and plans to retire in June.

Jim Hutton, publisher of Career Education Review, and recently retired president and chief executive of Harrison College at Indianapolis Downtown, has been named chief executive of Career Quest Learning Centers, in Michigan. He has served on the company’s Board of Directors since 2010.

Resignations

Juliette B. Bell, president of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore since 2012, says she will resign on June 30.

David L. Coppola, president of Keystone College since 2013, plans to step down and become vice president for administration and planning at Sacred Heart University in July.

George E. Ross, president of Central Michigan University since 2010, says he will step down on July 31.

Retirements

Sharon Diaz, who has led Samuel Merritt University since 1982, says she intends to retire as president and chief executive by January 2019.

Mary E. Rittling, president of Davidson County Community College since 2003, says she will retire at the end of 2018.

Carl J. Strikwerda, president of Elizabethtown College since 2011, says he will retire on June 30, 2019.

Garikai Campbell, former provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Morehouse College, to provost and dean of Knox College.

Thomas E. Kaplan, dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at Wittenberg University, to vice president for academic affairs at Indiana Institute of Technology, effective May 14.

Resignations

Andrew C. Comrie, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost of the University of Arizona, says he will resign from that position and return full time to the faculty. Jeffrey B. Goldberg, dean of the university’s College of Engineering, will serve as acting provost.

Myrna Hall, senior consultant and principal at the fund-raising consulting firm Marts & Lundy Inc., to vice president for advancement at Regis University.

Nico Karagosian, vice president for advancement and executive director of the University of Cincinnati Foundation, to vice president for university advancement at Ohio University, and president and chief executive of the Ohio University Foundation.

John M. Rathje, associate vice chancellor and chief information officer at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, to vice president for information services and chief information officer at Kent State University at Kent.

Patrick J. Stover, director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, to vice chancellor overseeing agricultural agencies for the Texas A&M University system and dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences on the flagship campus, in College Station.

Deaths

Gerardo Marín, a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of San Francisco, died on January 14. He was 70. Marín was author of more than 135 publications on topics related to Hispanic/Latino people and minority groups, including cultural norms, risky behaviors, culturally appropriate methodology, and acculturation. He was one of four editors of “Tobacco Use Among U.S. Racial/Ethnic Minority Groups,” a 1998 report of the U.S. Surgeon General.

Darío Menanteau, a professor emeritus of sociology and past director of the Center of Rural Sociology & Community Analysis at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on January 11. He was 80.

Irene Porcarello, president of Houston Community College’s Southeast College since 2009, died on February 3. She was 69.

Brother Thomas J. Scanlan, president emeritus of Manhattan College, died on February 4. He was 72. He led the college from 1987 to 2009. Earlier he served as vice chancellor and chief executive of Bethlehem University, in the Palestinian territories. In 2016, the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities honored him with the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC, Award, for his contribution to Catholic higher education.
