John Engler, president of the Business Roundtable from 2011 to 2017, governor of Michigan from 1991 to 2002, and a Republican, was named interim president of Michigan State University.
Judy D. Olian, dean of the Anderson School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles, will become president of Quinnipiac University on July 1. She will succeed John L. Lahey, who will retire at the end of the academic year after having led the institution for 31 years.
Harlan M. Sands, vice dean of finance and administration and chief financial officer of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, will become president of Cleveland State University on July 1. He will succeed Ronald M. Berkman, who is retiring after having been at the helm since 2009.
Brian K. Shepard, associate dean for faculty and academic affairs and a professor of audio-design practice in the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation at the University of Southern California, became president and chief academic officer at Cogswell College in January. He succeeds Deborah Snyder, who left in 2016 to lead St. Clair County Community College.
Lorraine Sterritt, president of Salem College, will become president of Saint Michael’s College, in Vermont, in July. She will succeed John. J. Neuhauser, who plans to step down in June. He has led the college since 2007.

Lou Anna K. Simon, president of Michigan State University since 2005, resigned in January following criticism of her response to a scandal in which a sports-medicine doctor who worked at the university until 2016 was accused and later convicted of sexual abuse.

Deaths
Bruce Cole, 79, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 2001 to 2009 and a professor emeritus at Indiana University at Bloomington, died on January 8. Cole was the longest-serving chairman of the NEH. During his tenure, the agency started the program We the People, which encouraged the teaching and understanding of American history and culture.
Talbert O. Shaw, president of Shaw University from 1987 to 2003, died on January 15. He was 89. Shaw was credited with saving the institution, whose financial troubles threatened to close it at the time he took over. During his tenure, the university built up an endowment.
Vernon Ward, 89, former associate clinical professor in the department of internal medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, died on January 1.
