Chief executives

Appointments

Grey Dimenna was named interim president of Monmouth University, taking over from Paul Brown. Mr. Dimenna retired as the university’s vice president and general counsel in 2015.

Patricia Draves, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the University of Mount Union, in Ohio, will become president of Graceland University on June 15. She will succeed John Sellars, who will retire in July after 10 years at the helm.

Margee Ensign will become president of Dickinson College on July 1. She will take over from Neil Weissman, who has served as interim president following the resignation of Nancy Roseman last June. Ms. Ensign has worked in Africa for 15 years, most recently as president of the American University of Nigeria.

Gene Fant Jr., provost and chief academic officer at Palm Beach Atlantic University, was named president of North Greenville University. He will start on June 1 and will take over from Randall Pannell, who has led the university as interim president since James Epting retired in 2015.

Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, general counsel and vice president for corporate development at Raven Industries, will become in August the first woman to lead Augustana University. Ms. Herseth Sandlin was a congresswoman for South Dakota for seven years starting in 2004. She will succeed Rob Oliver, who will retire in July after 11 years as Augustana’s president.

Michael Martin was named president of Florida Gulf Coast University. He is a former chancellor of the Colorado State and Louisiana State University systems. Mr. Martin will succeed Wilson Bradshaw, who plans to step down on June 30.

Retirements

Paul Brown, president of Monmouth University since 2013, begins a sabbatical this month and will retire in June.

John Delaney, president of the University of North Florida, will retire when his contract ends on May 30 next year. He will have led the university for 15 years.

Nancy Moody, the first female president of Tusculum College, will retire at the end of this year. She will have led the college for eight years.

Deborah Baldwin, associate provost for collections and archives and director of the Center for Arkansas History and Culture, to interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Sue Curry, dean of the College of Public Health, to interim executive vice president and provost at the University of Iowa.

Ted Scholz, interim chief academic officer, to vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.

Angela Blanton, interim vice president for finance and chief financial officer, to vice president for finance and chief financial officer at Carnegie Mellon University.

Michael Dixon, director of intercultural services, to chief diversity officer at Manchester University.

Larry Ferguson was appointed vice president for the Kentucky Community and Technical College system and will also serve as executive director of its foundation. Mr. Ferguson will start on March 16, after stepping down as president of Bevill State Community College, in Alabama.

David Heeke was named vice president for athletics at the University of Arizona. He has served for 11 years as athletics director at Central Michigan University and previously served in the University of Oregon’s athletics department for 18 years.

Cathy Light, director of the Office of the President and interim secretary of the corporation, to secretary of the corporation and chief of staff at Carnegie Mellon University.

Jessie Minton, director of business operations and technical support services at Oregon Health & Science University, to chief information officer and head of information services at the University of Oregon.

Daren Mooko, associate dean and Title IX coordinator at Pomona College, to vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Whitman College.

Corey Walker, dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education at Winston-Salem State University, will become vice president and dean of the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University in July. Mr. Walker will succeed John Kinney, who is stepping down after serving as dean since 1992. Mr. Kinney will remain on the faculty as a professor of theology.

Phil Weiler, senior executive director of marketing and brand management at the University of Illinois at Chicago, to vice president for marketing and communication at Washington State University.

Michelle Addington, a professor of sustainable architectural design at Yale School of Architecture, to dean of the School of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin.

Simone Cummings, associate dean of academic quality assurance, to dean of the George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology at Webster University.

Ann Marie Fallon, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Marylhurst University, to dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at St. John Fisher College.

James Hannon, assistant dean of academic affairs and research for the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at West Virginia University, to dean of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services at Kent State University.

Jessica Lavariega Monforti, chair of the department of political science at Pace University in New York City, will become dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at California Lutheran University in July. She will succeed Joan Griffin, who held the position for 10 years and will return to teaching full time.

Bernard Polnariev, administrative executive officer of academic affairs at LaGuardia Community College, to dean of curriculum, accreditation, and American Honors at Union County College.

Anton Wallner, associate dean of undergraduate programs at Barry University, to dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Webster University.

Jennifer Widom, senior associate dean of the School of Engineering at Stanford University, will become dean of the school on March 13. Ms. Widom has been a professor of computer science and electrical engineering at Stanford for 24 years. She will succeed Persis Drell, who stepped down in January to serve as the university’s provost.

Lynn Perry Wooten, senior associate dean of academic and student excellence in the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, to dean of the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University.

Retirements

Amy Ulmer, dean of English at Pasadena City College, will retire in June after 20 years at the college.

Mark Anthony Gooden, director of the principalship program and a professor of education at the University of Texas at Austin, to director of the Endeavor Leadership Initiative and a professor of education leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University.

John Hearn, director of student life and first-year experience at Eastern Kentucky University, to director of the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership at Millersville University of Pennsylvania.

Retirements

Bruce Johnson, associate dean of faculty affairs in the Carilion School of Medicine at Virginia Tech.

James Magnuson will retire in May after serving for 23 years as director of the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas. The program, which supports 12 creative-writing fellows a year, was created in 1993 with a $20-million donation from the best-selling novelist James Michener. In 1994, Mr. Magnuson, who was an English professor at time, was tapped to serve as the center’s first director. Mr. Magnuson is the author of nine novels and several plays.

Deaths

Beverly Ann Benson, 89, a professor emerita of nursing at the University of Arizona, died on February 14.

Bruno Boley, 92, former dean of the McCormick School of Engineering at Northwestern University, died on February 18.

Michael Levine, 75, former dean of the Yale School of Management at Yale University, died on February 7.

Norma Maine Loeser, 94, former dean of the School of Government and Business Administration at George Washington University, died on February 5 in Annapolis, Md.

Theodore Jay Lowi, 85, professor emeritus of American institutions and a professor of government at Cornell University, died on February 17.

Rosalina Sackstein, 93, a professor emeritus of piano at the University of Miami, died on February 14.

Francis Sobkowski, 83, founding dean of the School of Dental Medicine at Southern Illinois University, died on February 10.

Jan Vansina, a professor emeritus of history at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, died on February 8. He was considered a pioneer historian in African history, and helped to direct academic study of African history before the arrival of Europeans. Mr. Vansina worked at the University of Wisconsin at Madison for 35 years and has written over 200 articles and 20 books.
