Nancy Fair-Szofran, provost and chief learning officer for Community Colleges of Spokane, will serve as acting president of Spokane Falls Community College until it selects a permanent president this spring. The previous acting president, Darren Pitcher, resigned.
Richard J. Helldobler, interim president of Northeastern Illinois University, will become president of William Paterson University of New Jersey on July 1. He will succeed Kathleen Waldron, who plans to retire at the end of this academic year.
Farnam Jahanian, interim president of Carnegie Mellon University, was named to the post permanently. He joined the university in 2014 as vice provost for research and was named provost the next year. He held the interim role since last July, following the resignation of Subra Suresh.
Marisa Kelly, acting president of Suffolk University for more than a year and a half, will assume the post permanently. She joined the university as provost in 2014. The previous president, Margaret McKenna, was dismissed in 2016.
Maud S. Mandel, dean of the college and a professor of history and Judaic studies at Brown University, will become president of Williams College on July 1. Protik K. Majumder has been serving as interim president at Williams since January 1, following Adam F. Falk’s departure to lead the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Rodney Rogers, interim president of Bowling Green State University since January 1, was named to the post permanently in February. He had been provost and senior vice president since 2012. He succeeds Mary Ellen Mazey, who was granted the title president emeritus.
Amit Singh, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Clark State Community College, in Ohio, will become president of Edmonds Community College, near Seattle, on June 25. He will succeed Jean Hernandez, who retired on December 31.
Laura Skandera Trombley, former president of Pitzer College and of the Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, will become president of the University of Bridgeport on July 1. The current president, Neil A. Salonen, plans to step down at the end of June.

Sunstein, a Harvard University professor who founded and directs the Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy at Harvard Law School, is the 2018 Laureate of the Holberg Prize, given in recognition of the impact of his research on U.S. public policy. The government of Norway funds the prize, which this year carries an award of about $765,000.

Lucie Brock-Broido, a professor of writing and director of the poetry concentration in the School of Arts at Columbia University, died on March 6 following a brief illness. She was 61.

Dennis R. Corbin, senior associate athletic director for medical services at Western Michigan University, died on March 7 from a stroke. He was 63.
Ronald G. Douglas, a professor of mathematics at Texas A&M University at College Station, died on February 27. He was 79. From 1996 to 2002, he served as executive vice president and provost of the university.
Hayden V. White, a history scholar who taught at Wesleyan University, Stanford University, and on several campuses of the University of California system, died on March 5. He was 89. Among his best-known works is Metahistory: The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Europe (Johns Hopkins University Press, 1973).
