Chief executives

Appointments

Robert Cushman, vice president for academic administration at Walla Walla University, in Washington, was named president of Pacific Union College, in California. He will start on July 1.

Daryll DeWald, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Washington State University, will succeed Lisa Brown as chancellor of the Spokane campus. Ms. Brown will step down in August, and Mr. DeWald will start his new post in September.

Robert Fale, who previously served as interim president of Marian University, was appointed interim president of Silver Lake College, in Wisconsin.

Chris Maggio was appointed president of Northwestern State University, in Baton Rouge, La. He had served as acting president since January.

Lynn Morton, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Queens University of Charlotte, will become the first woman to serve as president of Warren Wilson College, in North Carolina. She will start on July 1.

Ora Hirsch Pescovitz, senior vice president and U.S. medical leader for Lilly Bio-Medicines at Eli Lilly and Company, was named president of Oakland University. She previously served as executive vice president for medical affairs and chief executive of the health system at the University of Michigan. Ms. Pescovitz will start on July 1.

Jan Puszynski, vice president for research, was named interim president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He will take over from Heather Wilson, who has been appointed Secretary of the Air Force.

Lesley Travers, dean of the School of Business and Industry at Casper College, in Wyoming, will become president of Eastern Wyoming College. She will begin on July 1.

Damian Woetzel was named president of the Juilliard School. Mr. Woetzel, who currently serves as director of the Aspen Institute Arts Program and artistic director of the Vail International Dance Festival, will start in July next year.

Resignations

Lisa Brown, chancellor of Washington State University at Spokane, will step down in August.

Robert Pastoor, president of Saint Joseph’s College, in Indiana, has resigned.

Glenn Poshard has resigned as president of Morthland College, in Illinois, after about two months on the job. A representative of the college said he cited health reasons.

Neil Salonen, president of the University of Bridgeport, will step down on June 30, 2018. He will have led the university for 18 years.

Heather Wilson, president of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, has stepped down to serve as secretary of the Air Force.

Retirements

Thomas Hellie, president of Linfield College, in Oregon, will retire on June 30, 2018, after 12 years at the helm.

Mark Huddleston, who will have served as president of the University of New Hampshire for 11 years, will retire on June 30, 2018.

Jennifer Bard, dean of the law school at the University of Cincinnati, has resigned after receiving a settlement of $600,000 and dropping a lawsuit against the university.

Peter Kivy, a professor emeritus of musicology and philosophy at Rutgers University, died on May 6 at age 82.

Norman James Norton, former vice president for academic affairs and provost at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, died on March 24 in Columbia, S.C., at age 83.

Jerrell Shofner, a professor emeritus of history and former chair of the history department at the University of Central Florida, died on April 11 at age 88.

Mark Wainberg, a professor of biology and virology at McGill University, died on April 11 at age 71. Mr. Wainberg was part of a research team that in 1989 identified the antiviral properties of lamivudine used to treat Hepatitis B and HIV infection.

Gerard Washnitzer, a professor emeritus of mathematics at Princeton University, died on April 2 in Scotch Plains, N.J., at age 91.
