Appointments

Carmen Twillie Ambar, president of Cedar Crest College, will become president of Oberlin College in September. She will be Oberlin’s first African-American leader and will succeed Marvin Krislov, who will step down on June 30.

George Hanks Brown, president emeritus of the University of Colorado and a former U.S. senator, will serve as Arcadia University’s interim president starting on July 1.

Daryl Burckel, a professor of accounting, was named president of McNeese State University, in Louisiana. He will succeed Philip Williams, who will retire on June 30.

David Finley, interim provost, vice president for academic affairs, and dean of engineering and business at Lake Superior State University, was named acting president of the Michigan institution following the death of Thomas Pleger, on May 7.

James King, executive vice chancellor at Northeast State Community College, in Tennessee, was appointed interim president. He will take over from Janice Gilliam, who is to retire on June 30.

Kurt Landgraf, former president and chief executive of Educational Testing Service, was named president of Washington College, in Maryland. He will start on July 1, succeeding Sheila Bair.

Charlotte Morris, interim dean of the Andrew F. Brimmer College of Business and Information Science at Tuskegee University, will serve as interim president.

Joseph Opatz, president emeritus of Normandale Community College, in Minnesota, from which he retired in 2014, will become interim president of Ridgewater College on July 1. He will take over from Doug Allen, who will step down on June 30 after 14 years in office.

Darren Pitcher, vice president for learning and student services, will serve as acting president of Spokane Falls Community College, in Washington, for a year while the college conducts a search to replace Janet Gullickson, who will step down to lead Germanna Community College, in Virginia.

Venkat Reddy was appointed chancellor of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He has held the post on an interim basis since February, following Pam Shockley-Zalabak’s retirement.

Timothy Trainor, who has served as interim president of Mount St. Mary’s University since last June, was named president of the institution, in Maryland. Mr. Trainor is a retired brigadier general in the Army who served for six years as dean of the Academic Board of the U.S. Military Academy. He succeeds Simon Newman, who resigned last year.

Tonjua Williams, senior vice president for student services at St. Petersburg College, was named president, making her the first woman and the first African-American to lead the Florida college.

Resignations

Sheila Bair, president of Washington College, in Maryland, since 2015, will step down on June 30.

Brian L. Johnson, president of Tuskegee University since 2014, will leave office on June 30. The Board of Trustees failed to offer him a contract extension after that date.

Gloria Cordes Larson, president of Bentley University, plans to step down on June 30, 2018. She will have led the university for 11 years.

David Pershing, president of the University of Utah since 2012, will resign and return to the faculty when a successor has been named.

Retirements

Clayton Alred, president of Eastern New Mexico University’s Ruidoso campus since 2009, will retire when a successor has been named.

Janice Gilliam, president of Northeast State Community College, in Tennessee, since 2009, will retire on June 30.

Fran Hendricks, president of Mansfield University of Pennsylvania since 2013, will retire on August 18.

Robert Henry, president of Oklahoma City University, will retire on June 30, 2018, after eight years at the helm.

Sharon Herzberger, will retire as president of Whittier College at the end of the 2017-18 academic year, by which time she will have been in the job for 13 years.

George Pruitt, who has served as president of Thomas Edison State University for 35 years, will retire at the end of this year.

Michael Boska, 59, a professor and vice chair of radiology research at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, died on May 13 in a one-man-glider accident near Blair, Neb.

Peter Flawn, 91, president emeritus of the University of Texas at Austin, died on May 7.

Alan Tick Hirsch, 62, a former adjunct professor of epidemiology, radiology, and medicine at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on April 14.

Anthony Kaye, vice president for scholarly programs at the National Humanities Center, died on May 14.

Allan Meltzer, 89, a professor of political economy at Carnegie Mellon University, died on May 8.

Thomas Martine, 66, assistant order librarian at Princeton University Library, died on April 19 from a heart attack.

Warren Phillips, 90, former president of Dunwoody College of Technology, died in Athens, Ga., on April 7.

Thomas Pleger, 48, president of Lake Superior State University since 2014, died on May 7 after undergoing brain surgery.

Ann R. Porter who served as faculty dean of Dunster House at Harvard University for 16 years, died on May 17 after battling breast cancer.

Judith Stein, 77, a retired professor of history who taught at the City University of New York Graduate Center for 50 years, died on May 8 in New York City.

William Taggart, 55, interim president of Morehouse College, died suddenly, of an aneurysm, on June 7.

Harold Francis Weaver, 99, a professor emeritus and former chair of the astronomy department at the University of California at Berkeley, died on April 26. Mr. Weaver was considered a pioneer of radio astronomy. He founded the Radio Astronomy Laboratory at UC Berkeley and served as its director for 14 years, starting in 1958.
