Chief executives

Appointments

Roslyn Clark Artis, president of Florida Memorial University since 2014, will become president of Benedict College on September 1. She will be the college’s first female chief executive.

Rebecca Ashford, who was vice president for student affairs at Pellissippi State Community College, became president of Chattanooga State Community College on July 10, taking over from the interim president, Debbie Adams. Ms. Ashford succeeds Flora W. Tydings, who became chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents system in February.

Phyllis Worthy Dawkins, interim president of Bennett College since last summer, was appointed permanently to the post.

T. Taylor Eighmy, vice chancellor for research and engagement and a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, has been named sole finalist for the presidency of the University of Texas at San Antonio. The previous president, Ricardo Romo, who had been planning to retire, stepped down abruptly in March following allegations that he violated sexual-harassment policies. Pedro Reyes, the University of Texas system’s former executive vice chancellor for academic affairs, has been serving as interim president since March.

Stephanie F. Gardner, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, was named interim chancellor of the medical campus. She will start July 31, when the current chancellor, Dan Rahn, retires.

James Herbert, who was executive vice provost and dean of the Graduate College at Drexel University, became president of the University of New England on July 1. He succeeded Danielle Ripich, who led the university for 11 years.

Mark La Branche, who had been president of Louisburg College since 2009, became president of Martin Methodist College on July 1. He succeeds the late Ted Brown, who retired in January.

Shawntel Landry, interim president of the American College of Education since 2013, was appointed permanent president. She joined the online institution in 2009 and has held several administrative posts there.

Thomas McHenry, who was a partner with the Los Angeles law firm Gibson Dunn, became president and dean of Vermont Law School on July 1. He succeeds Marc B. Mihaly.

Rebecca Stoltzfus, vice provost for undergraduate education and a professor of human nutrition at Cornell University, will become president of Goshen College on November 1. She will succeed James E. Brenneman, who stepped down in June. Goshen’s provost, Ken Newbold, is serving as interim president. Ms. Stoltzfus’s father, Victor Stoltzfus, was president of Goshen from 1984 to 1996.

Hilda Tunstill, vice president for finance and administration at Motlow State Community College, will become interim president.

Neal Weaver, vice president for university advancement and innovation at Nicholls State University, was appointed president of Georgia Southwestern State University.

Judie Wexler, who had been interim president and provost at the California Institute of Integral Studies since 2016, became permanent president on July 1, the first woman in that role. She joined the institution as an academic vice president in 2002.

Resignations

Tashni-Ann Dubroy, president of Shaw University since 2015, will step down to become executive vice president and chief operating officer at Howard University in October.

Adam Falk, president of Williams College since 2010, will step down in December to become president of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

John J. Neuhauser, president of Saint Michael’s College, in Vermont, will step down in June 2018.

Retirement

R. Barbara Gitenstein, president of the College of New Jersey since 1999, says she will retire in June 2018. She is the first woman to serve as president of the institution. During her tenure, she substantially improved four-year graduation rates.

Michael K. McLendon, dean of Baylor University’s School of Education and a professor of higher-education leadership and policy, to interim provost of the university.

Martin Philbert, dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, to provost and executive vice president for academic affairs there.

Laurie Weingart, senior associate dean of education in the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University, to interim provost there.

Retirement

Daniel I. Linzer, provost of Northwestern University since 2007, will retire this summer. On October 1, he will become president and chief executive officer of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, a foundation in Tucson.

Michael A. Elliott, a professor of English who had served as interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University since last August, was named to the post permanently.

Resignations

Eric Dannenmaier, who had been on voluntary administrative leave since February, resigned as the dean of Northern Illinois University’s College of Law.

Richard Feldman, who served as dean of the College in Arts, Sciences and Engineering at the University of Rochester for the past decade, is stepping down. He will return as a professor of philosophy following a year of leave.

James Goldgeier, dean of the American University School of International Service, will step down from his post of six years on August 8.

Retirement

Patricia Cutright, dean of library services at Central Washington University since 2010, will retire in August.

Ken Lehrman, vice provost for affirmative action at Pennsylvania State University at University Park since 2008, retired in July.

Awards & fellowships

Martha S. Cooley, a professor of English at Adelphi University, won the O. Henry Prize for her short fiction “Mercedes Benz.”

Saif Y. Ishoof, vice president for engagement at Florida International University, has been selected one of 68 Marshall Memorial Fellows for 2017-18. The fellowship, a program of the German Marshall Fund of the United States, promotes leadership in trans-Atlantic relations.

Vithala R. Rao, a professor of management and of marketing and quantitative methods at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, received the 2017 Gilbert A. Churchill Award for Lifetime Contributions to Marketing Research. The award is administered by the American Marketing Association’s Marketing Research Special Interest Group.

Deaths

David Fromkin, 84, a lawyer and professor emeritus at Boston University, died on June 11. He was also founding director of the university’s Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future. He joined the university in 1994 after writing several books, including A Peace to End All Peace, on the Middle East.

Paul Hardin III, 86, who was chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1988 to 1995, died on July 1. Earlier, he served as president of Wofford College, Southern Methodist University, and Drew University, and was a trustee of Duke University.

Adrian G. Marcuse, 95, who was president of LIM College, in New York, from 1972 to 2002, died on June 29. His father founded LIM as a junior college to train women for careers in retail in 1939. Under Adrian Marcuse’s leadership, LIM became a co-ed four-year college. Mr. Marcuse was also a founding member of the Association of Proprietary Colleges, in New York.
