Kimberly Beatty, who was vice chancellor for instructional services and chief academic officer at Houston Community College, became chancellor of Metropolitan Community College at Kansas City on July 1. She succeeds Mark James, who retired at the end of June.

Chief executives

Appointments

Kimberly Beatty, who was vice chancellor for instructional services and chief academic officer at Houston Community College, became chancellor of Metropolitan Community College at Kansas City on July 1. She succeeds Mark James, who retired at the end of June.

John Estorge, who was associate campus director and director of admissions at Miller-Motte College, is the new president of the Fortis College campus in Foley, Ala.

Edwin Hernández, provost at Adventist University of Health Sciences, will become the university’s president. He succeeds David Greenlaw, the university’s founding president, who planned to retire on July 31.

Richard L. Ludwick, who had been president of the Independent Colleges of Indiana since 2010, became president of University of St. Thomas, in Houston, on July 1. He succeeded Robert Ivany, who led the university for 13 years.

Carlo Montemagno, a professor of engineering who founded and leads the interdisciplinary Ingenuity Lab at the University of Alberta, in Canada, will become chancellor of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale on August 15. He is an expert in nanotechnology.

Charlene Purtlebaugh, vice president for operations at SAE Institute, was named president of Remington College Online.

Mark Rocha, senior program manager at the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery, in New York, and a former president of Pasadena City College, became chancellor of the City College of San Francisco on July 1. He replaced the interim chancellor, Susan Lamb, who led the college during its successful effort to keep its accreditation.

Subra Suresh, the past director of the National Science Foundation who stepped down as president of Carnegie Mellon University in June, will become president of Nanyang Technological University, in Singapore, on January 1. He will succeed Bertil Andersson, who has been at the helm at Nanyang since 2011.

Reginald Sykes, interim president of Bishop State Community College since February 2016, has been named to the post permanently.

Resignations

Daniel L. Lehmann will step down as president of Hebrew College, which he has led since 2008, in the coming academic year.

Don Straney, chancellor of the University of Hawaii at Hilo, will step aside from that role to become vice president for academic planning and policy for the University of Hawaii system, effective August 1.

Retirements

Frank T. Brogan says he will retire as chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education on September 1. He has held that post since 2013. Previously he was chancellor of the State University System of Florida, president of Florida Atlantic University, lieutenant governor of Florida, and secretary of education of Florida.

Steven Gamble, president of Eastern New Mexico University, retired on July 1. He had led the college for 16 years.

Edison Jackson, president of Bethune- Cookman University since 2013, has said he will retire early, about a year before his contract was set to expire. He has been praised for increasing enrollment but criticized for an expensive dormitory deal and his decision to invite U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to speak at commencement.

Thomas A. Kazee, president of the University of Evansville since 2010, plans to retire on May 31, 2018. During his presidency, the university secured the largest gift in its history, a $39-million bequest.

Ronald R. Peterson, president of the Johns Hopkins Health System and executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine, plans to retire in December after more than 44 years at the organization.

Michael T. Brown, dean of the University of California at Santa Barbara Extension and a former chair of the University of California Academic Senate, to provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of California in September. He will succeed Aimée Dorr, who is retiring.

Carol A. Fierke, dean of the Rackham Graduate School and vice provost for academic affairs and graduate studies at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, to provost and executive vice president at Texas A&M University at College Station.

Joshua Hamilton, dean of the Swenson College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota at Duluth, to provost and vice president for academic affairs at Rhode Island College.

Lily S. Hsu, who was vice provost at Johnson & Wales University, to provost there in June. Thomas L. Dwyer, who had been provost and vice chancellor, will continue as vice chancellor.

Linda C. Martin, director of the second-year transformational-experience program at Ohio State University, to vice president for academic affairs and student success at the University of Tennessee.

Michelle Metzinger, who was vice president for academics at Presentation College, to provost and vice president for academic affairs at the University of Saint Mary, in Kansas, in July. She succeeded Bryan Le Beau, who retired.

Marni Baker Stein, chief innovation officer at the University of Texas system’s Institute for Transformational Learning, to provost and chief academic officer at Western Governors University.

Departures

Kathleen Smith, who was chief administrative officer of the University of Louisville Foundation, is no longer working there, a foundation official said in a statement. A recent forensic audit of the foundation described lax oversight of funds and poor decision making. Ms. Smith had been on paid leave since last fall.

Sue Cange, a U.S. Department of Energy administrator who was manager of the agency’s Office of Environmental Management in Oak Ridge, Tenn., became a visiting scholar in civil and environmental engineering at Vanderbilt University. She started her two-year appointment in July.

Elise Miller, a higher-education consultant and a past senior program officer for postsecondary data at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to vice president for research and policy analysis at the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.

Ted Mitchell, a consultant to the American Council on Education and an under secretary of education during the Obama administration, to president of the council on September 1. He will succeed Molly Corbett Broad, who has led the organization since 2008.

Judith Scherer Connealy, assistant vice president for adult and international student enrollment at Briar Cliff University, to director of continuing education and outreach at College Center, in Nebraska. The center is a joint continuing-education project between Wayne State College and Northeast Community College.

Deaths

S. Allen Counter, a professor of neuroscience and founding director of the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, died on July 12 following a brief illness. He was 73.

Paul Gannon, a former associate professor of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on July 6. He was 88.

Larry Houck, a professor of religion at Mount Vernon Nazarene University from 2000 to 2010, died in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on July 22. He was 70.

Russell Langworthy, a professor emeritus of sociology and anthropology at Carleton College, died in Providence, R.I., on July 1. He was 92.

Maryam Mirzakhani, a professor of mathematics at Stanford University who was the only woman to ever win the Fields Medal, died at Stanford Hospital on July 14, at age 40. She had breast cancer, which spread to her liver and bones. A specialist in theoretical mathematics, she won the prestigious Fields Medal in 2014. Before she joined the Stanford faculty in 2009, Ms. Mirzakhani, a native of Iran, was an assistant professor at Princeton University and a research fellow at Clay Mathematics Institute.

Sister Joyce Rowland, née Cecilia Mary Rowland, president of the College of Saint Teresa from 1969 to 1980, died in Rochester, Minn., on July 19. She was 94.

Kenneth Silverman, a professor emeritus of English at New York University who wrote The Life and Times of Cotton Mather and other biographies, died on July 7. He was 81. He won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize in Biography or Autobiography for his book on Mather, a Puritan preacher.

Naip Tuna, a professor of medicine, a cardiologist, and a researcher at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities until he retired at age 90, died in Edina, Minn., on June 24. He was 95.
