James C. Williamson, president of the North Carolina Community College System, says he will resign, effective September 30. He served one year in the role.
Retirements
Kathy A. Krendl, president of Otterbein University since 2009, says she plans to retire in June 2018. During her tenure, the university introduced its first doctoral program, the doctor of nursing practice.
Lee Royce, president of Mississippi College since 2002, says he plans to retire in May 2018. Under his leadership, international and overall enrollment expanded significantly.

Haywood L. Strickland, president of Wiley College, says he plans to retire in June 2018. He has served as president since 2000. During his tenure, the college received a $1-million gift from the actor Denzel Washington to revive its debate team.
Jack Varsalona, president of Wilmington University, retired in June. He first joined the university in 1987 as an executive vice president and provost, and became president in 2005. Under his leadership, enrollment more than doubled, 118 online programs were developed, and the institution made the transition from college to university.
The Rev. Kevin William Wildes, president of Loyola University New Orleans since 2004, will retire in June 2018.

M. Joan Dawson, a professor emerita of molecular and integrative physiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a pioneer of in vivo magnetic-resonance spectroscopy, died on July 27. She was 73. Among her scientific contributions were seminal Nature and Journal of Physiology papers in the 1970s and 80s explaining mechanisms of muscle energetics and fatigue using magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
William Theodore de Bary, a professor emeritus and provost emeritus at Columbia University who established its Heyman Center for the Humanities, died on July 14. He was 97. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2014.

Marian Cleeves Diamond, 90, professor emerita of integrative biology at the University of California at Berkeley, died on July 25. An expert in brain anatomy, Ms. Diamond was one of the first female science instructors at Cornell University, where she began teaching in 1955. She became famous in the 1990s for studying preserved slices of Albert Einstein’s brain.
Samuel L. Griffin, former director of bands at Alcorn State University, died in early August. He founded the university’s Sounds of Dyn-O-Mite.
Cathleen S. Morawetz, who was a professor at New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Science for over 60 years, died on August 8. She was 94. For her pioneering engineering research on airflow over airplane wings flying faster than the speed of sound, and remote-sensing techniques like radar and ultrasound, Ms. Morawetz received the National Medal of Science in 1998. She also served as the Courant Institute’s first female director from 1984 to 1988.
Sam Sanderson, research associate professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Pharmacy, died on August 8. He was 63.
Sam Shanmugan, 74, a distinguished professor emeritus of electrical engineering and computer sciences at the University of Kansas, died on August 1. Mr. Shanmugan taught at the university for 34 years before retiring in 2015.

Steve Starkey, who was instrumental in introducing the teaching of formal writing in English to Hungarians, died in Budapest, Hungary, on July 18. He was 60. Mr. Starkey taught English at the University of Pécs from 1986 to 1995 and later for two years in South Korea. He translated Hungarian archaeology and art books into English, and presented new methodologies in foreign-language learning and instruction.
Louis Szalontai, a chief business and financial officer at three universities, died in Cleveland on August 9, following a lengthy battle with bone-marrow cancer. He was 78. In 1969, Mr. Szalontai joined Kenyon College as a comptroller. In 1978, he became vice president for business affairs and treasurer at Ashland University, and then held those roles at Southern Connecticut State University and Ohio Wesleyan University. He left Ohio Wesleyan in 1995 to join Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was vice president for finance and assistant to the president for special-needs projects until he retired in 2002.
Steadman Upham, 68, an anthropologist and president emeritus of the University of Tulsa, died July 30. Mr. Upham led Tulsa from 2004 to 2016. Before that, from 1998 to 2004, he was president of Claremont Graduate University.
Correction (9/6/2017, 5:15 p.m.): The death notice for Marian Cleeves Diamond should have identified her as one of the first female science instructors at Cornell University rather than the first. The item has been corrected.
