Appointments

Gregory Anderson, vice president for planning, research, and institutional effectiveness at the San Mateo County Community College District, in California, was named president of Saddleback College. He succeeds Tod Burnett, who became executive vice chancellor at Brandman University.

Chief executives

Appointments

Gregory Anderson, vice president for planning, research, and institutional effectiveness at the San Mateo County Community College District, in California, was named president of Saddleback College. He succeeds Tod Burnett, who became executive vice chancellor at Brandman University.

Kevin Brockbank, vice provost for strategic initiatives in the district office of the Community Colleges of Spokane, was named acting president of Spokane Community College. He replaces Ryan Carstens, who has moved to the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges.

Paul Carlsen, who was chief content officer at the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, became president of Lakeshore Technical College, in Cleveland, in July. He succeeded Michael Lanser, who retired after 14 years in the job.

Angela Garcia Falconetti, vice president for institutional advancement at Virginia Western Community College, has become president of Polk State College, in Florida. She succeeded Eileen Holden, who retired.

John C. Hernandez, for the past year interim president of Santiago Canyon College, in Santa Ana, Calif., has been named permanently to the job. Previously he was vice president for student services there for 11 years.

Roger Moore, vice chancellor at Arkansas State University at Beebe, to interim chancellor. He replaces Karla Fisher, who resigned on August 15.

Anthony Munroe, a higher-education consultant and visiting assistant professor of sociology at DePaul University, has been named president of Essex County College, in New Jersey. He replaces Gale Gibson, who was fired last year.

Ty A. Stone, who was vice president for strategic initiatives at Sinclair Community College, in Dayton, Ohio, has become president of Jefferson Community College, part of the State University of New York, in Watertown. She succeeds Carole A. McCoy, who retired.

Sherry Zylka, provost of the Wayne County Community College District, in Detroit, has been named president of Big Sandy Community and Technical College, in Prestonsburg, Ky. She will start the job on October 1.

Departures

Paul Drayton Jr., president of Rowan College at Burlington County, in New Jersey, since March 2015, was placed on paid administrative leave by the Board of Trustees on August 30. Michael Cioce, vice president for enrollment management and student success, was named acting president.

Retirements

Linda L.M. Bennett, president of the University of Southern Indiana, will retire in June 2018. She has held the job since 2009, after having been provost and vice president for academic affairs since 2003. She is also a professor of political science.

Philip Kerstetter, president of the University of Mount Olive since 2009, has announced that he will retire at the end of the current academic year. During his time in office, Mount Olive went from a college to a university.

Robert Z. Carr Jr., dean of the School of Education and Psychology at Alcorn State University, to provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

Resignations

April Mason, provost and senior vice president at Kansas State University, will step down in June 2018.

Jeffrey Thibert, acting director of the Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement at the University of Notre Dame, has been appointed permanently to the job.

Cheryl B. Torsney, a professor of English and former senior vice provost at the University of Texas at El Paso, to vice provost for faculty affairs at Middle Tennessee State University.

José Villalba, senior associate dean for faculty, evaluation, and inclusivity at Wake Forest University, to interim chief diversity officer.

Deaths

M. Louise Fitzpatrick, dean of Villanova University’s College of Nursing since 1978, died on August 31. She created the master’s and doctoral programs at the college and wrote several books, including Prologue to Professionalism: A History of Nursing.

James Dickson Phillips Jr., 94, a former dean of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law, died on August 27. A native of North Carolina, he was also a lawyer, a law professor, and a longtime federal judge.

Andreas S. Rosenberg, 92, an emeritus professor of lab medicine and pathology at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, died on August 29. Born in Estonia, he earned degrees at the University of Uppsala, in Sweden, before arriving in the United States in 1962. At Minnesota he wrote more than 300 academic papers.
