Chief executives

Appointments

Jeanne Colleran, provost and academic vice president at John Carroll University, became interim president of the university on June 1. Her appointment followed the retirement of the Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, who led John Carroll for 12 years.

Chief executives

Appointments

Jeanne Colleran, provost and academic vice president at John Carroll University, became interim president of the university on June 1. Her appointment followed the retirement of the Rev. Robert L. Niehoff, who led John Carroll for 12 years.

Dennis Epps, acting chancellor of Louisiana Delta Community College since August 2016, was appointed to that post permanently in June. Earlier, he was vice president for work-force solutions at Louisiana Community and Technical College system.

Thomas M. Evans, who was president of Carroll College from 2012 until July 31 of this year, became president of the University of the Incarnate Word on August 1. He succeeds Louis Agnese Jr., who retired last year after leading the institution for three decades.

Protik (Tiku) Majumder, a professor of natural philosophy and director of the Science Center at Williams College, will become the college’s interim president on January 1. The current president, Adam Falk, plans to step down at the end of the year to lead the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Peter W.T. Pisters, president and chief executive of University Health Network, in Toronto, has been named sole finalist to be president of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Previously he worked as medical director of MD Anderson’s six regional cancer centers.

The Rev. Stephen C. Rowan, who was interim dean of arts and sciences at Saint Martin’s University, in Washington, became interim president of Carroll College, in Montana, on August 1. He also served as interim president of Carroll in 2000-1.

Dennis N. Voskuil, director of Hope College’s A.C. Van Raalte Institute, began serving as the college’s interim president on July 1. He took the place of John Knapp, who became president of Washington & Jefferson College on August 1.

Rebecca Wyke, vice chancellor for finance and administration in the University of Maine system, became president of the University of Maine at Augusta on July 1. She was interim president there for six months in 2015.

Resignations

Charlotte Borst has stepped down as president of the College of Idaho after two years in the role. Bob Hoover, who was the college’s president from 2003 to 2008, will be interim leader while a permanent replacement is sought.

Retirements

Horace Mitchell, president of California State University at Bakersfield since 2004, says he will retire on June 30, 2018. Before taking the helm there, he was vice chancellor for business and administrative services at the University of California at Berkeley.

Deaths

Norris Allen Edney Sr., who served as interim and acting president of Alcorn State University through two leadership transitions, in 2010-11 and 2013-14, died on August 26. He previously served as chairman of the university’s biology department and dean of arts and sciences.

Christopher M. Patti, chief campus counsel of the University of California at Berkeley, was killed in Sonoma County on August 27 after a car struck his bicycle. He was 59.

Paul Frank Theiner, a professor emeritus of English at Syracuse University, died on July 11. He was 80. Mr. Theiner, who was influential in the development of the university’s creative-writing program, was the author of two books, as well as many papers on Chaucer, Middle English, medieval French, and other topics in literature.

Samuel V. Wilson, president of Hampden-Sydney College from 1992 to 2000, died on June 10. He was 93. A retired lieutenant general in the U.S. Army, Mr. Wilson oversaw an increase in enrollment. Four years into his term, the Board of Trustees voted to remain a men’s college.
