Commuting students at two-year public colleges spend about as much on books as do students at public and private four-year colleges, and they spend more on transportation, but they save substantially on the costs of tuition and room and board.
4-year public colleges 4-year private colleges 2-year public colleges
In-state on-campus Out-of-state on-campus On-campus Commuter
Tuition and fees $8,655 $21,706 $29,056 $3,131

Books and supplies $1,200 $1,200 $1,244 $1,229
Transportation $1,110 $1,110 $957 $1,648
Other expenses $2,091 $2,091 $1,570 $2,157
Total* $22,261 $35,312 $43,289 $15,584

* Average total expenses include room-and-board costs for commuting students, which are the average estimated living expenses for students living off the campus but not with parents.
Note: Expense categories are based on institutional budgets for students as reported by nearly 4,000 colleges and universities in the Annual Survey of Colleges. They do not necessarily reflect actual student expenditures.
