Carlo D. Montemagno, chancellor of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, died on Thursday morning, according to a university announcement.
The cause of his death is not clear. In June he wrote that he had received a diagnosis of cancer, the Chicago Tribune reports.
“His loss will be deeply felt at SIU, in Southern Illinois, and in the scientific and academic communities,” wrote Kevin Dorsey, interim president of the Southern Illinois University system, in a message to the campus.
Montemagno had served as chancellor since August 2017. The Board of Trustees will convene for a special meeting to appoint an interim chancellor, Dorsey wrote.
