Massachusetts had 15 institutions on the list of the colleges with the greatest endowment wealth in the 2017 fiscal year. Those 15 colleges together had endowment value of more than $70 billion. That amount exceeds the estimated total national wealth of individual countries like Sri Lanka, Jordan, and Lithuania in 2017. The combined value of the endowments of the 15 California institutions on the list was $55 billion, with the 10 Texas institutions on the list not far behind. They had a combined value of more than $52 billion. In each of those two states, the endowments of the top institutions together were worth more than the national wealth of individual countries like Latvia, Estonia, and the Ukraine.

Note: Data represent 809 U.S. college and university endowments and affiliated foundations with combined assets of $567 billion, along with 13 Canadian universities, whose endowment values are expressed in U.S. dollars. The one-year percentage-change column indicates changes in endowments’ market value from the end of the 2016 fiscal year, which for most colleges closed on June 30, 2016, to the end of the 2017 fiscal year, which for most colleges closed on June 30, 2017. Percentage change does not represent the rate of return on the institution’s investments but rather the net effect of withdrawals, payment of fees, contributions of donors, and investment gains or losses. Large percentage changes should be interpreted cautiously because they can result from fluctuations in the estimated valuations of real estate and other “illiquid” assets, or transfers from other institutional budget accounts. National-wealth comparisons were based on figures from Credit Suisse’s Global Wealth Databook 2017. An interactive tool with endowment data from 2007 to 2017 is on The Chronicle’s website. More data can be found here. Questions or comments on the Almanac should be sent to the Almanac editor.
