Note: Four-year public and private nonprofit degree-granting colleges that participate in Title IV federal financial-aid programs and have 15 or more full-time employees were considered in this analysis. “New hires” are defined as those who were engaged for full-time permanent employment for the first time, or after a break in service (excluding sabbaticals), between November 1, 2016, and October 31, 2017. Positions were designated as a research hire if the new employee’s work was primarily focused on conducting research, regardless of the individual’s title, academic rank, or tenure status. Among those included in the full-time research category are professors and postdoctoral fellows who are primarily devoted to research. Tied institutions are listed in alphabetical order. Questions or comments on the Chronicle List should be sent to Ruth Hammond.
