Colleges With the Highest Percentages of Faculty Members Who Are Tenured or on the Tenure Track, Fall 2016

Almanac 2018
August 19, 2018

At some colleges, all or nearly all of staff members with faculty status were tenured or on the tenure track in the fall of 2016. But that did not mean that students at those institutions could expect to be taught entirely by tenured and tenure-track professors. Most of the institutions on the list below had a significant number of staff members without faculty status who were involved in instruction, and several had a sizable number of graduate assistants. Of the institutions listed below, only Rush University, in Chicago, classified all of its instructional staff members, even instructors who were on annual contracts and who were not on the tenure track, as having faculty status.

Note: Categories include both full-time and part-time employees. The number of staff members with faculty status is generally a subset of all staff members involved in instruction, research, and/or public service. At institutions in this table, those staff members are all or almost all devoted to instruction, rather than research or public service, except at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York Medical College. Questions or comments on the Almanac should be sent to the Almanac editor.
