Twenty-five public and three private nonprofit universities employed more than 3,000 graduate assistants each in 2015. The University of California at San Francisco, and the California and Massachusetts Institutes of Technology had the highest ratios of graduate assistants to students. Note: Data represent graduate assistants at four-year public and private nonprofit degree-granting institutions in the United States that have 15 or more employees and that are eligible to participate in Title IV federal financial-aid programs. The ratio of graduate assistants per 1,000 students was calculated based on the enrollment all students in the fall of 2015. In addition to teaching and research, graduate assistants’ assignments included work in community service, health care and technology, library and instructional support, and other areas. Institutions are ranked by total number of graduate assistants. Tied institutions are listed alphabetically.
