Explore 120 tables on faculty and presidential salaries, fastest-growing colleges, major gifts to higher education, cumulative student-loan debt, starting salaries for recent graduates, college enrollment by state, and more. Choose your state and compare its data on higher education with national figures. For a deeper analysis, read articles on the impact African-American presidents have had on diversity at primarily white institutions, efforts to increase enrollment at Roman Catholic colleges, generous donations to colleges by presidents and professors, and the effect of required college-entrance exams on the pursuit of higher education in several states. Note: The data represent more than 240,000 full-time faculty members at 743 four-year institutions in the United States. Salaries are those in effect on November 1, 2015. Averages are unweighted. Salaries for 11- to-12-month work years are adjusted to be equivalent to nine- to-10-month work years. New assistant professors are faculty members hired at that rank in the fall of 2015. New assistant professors’ salaries are considered twice, in their own category and as part of the “assistant professor” salaries. For non-tenure teaching faculty members, a professor is defined as someone with 15 or more years of teaching experience; an associate professor, seven to 14 years of teaching experience; assistant professor, four to six years; and instructor/lecturer, zero to three years. A dash indicates insufficient data.

Correction (May 9, 2017, 2:00 p.m.): The original version of this table listed inaccurate average salaries for non-tenure teaching faculty members at the instructor level for 15 disciplines, which range alphabetically from "History" to "Theology and religious vocations." Those salaries have been corrected.
