The Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture at Columbia University annually awards $6,000 for the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prizes for the Translation of Japanese Literature. The prize is given for the best translation of a modern work or a classical work, or the prize is divided between equally distinguished translations. Translations must be of book-length Japanese literary works: novels, collections of short stories, manga, literary essays, memoirs, drama, or poetry. Submissions may be unpublished manuscripts, works in press, or books published during the two years prior to the prize year. Translators must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. June 15: Health/medicine. Nominations are invited for the 2017 Frank H. Morriss Jr. Leadership Award. This award is granted in honor of Dr. Frank H. Morriss Jr., professor and former head of the department of pediatrics at the University of Iowa. The award recognizes sustained leadership in an academic setting that has resulted in improved health or well-being of children through innovation in clinical care, investigation of children’s diseases and problems, advocacy on behalf of child health, or facilitation of collaborative efforts. The test of leadership shall be that one developed a new strategy, set a new course or direction, marshaled resources or people toward an effort, or found common ground among competing interests. The Online Learning Consortium (OLC) is accepting submissions for the 2016 OLC Digital Learning Innovation Award (#DLIAward), recognizing exemplary higher-education faculty-led teams and institutions for advancing undergraduate student success through the adoption of digital courseware. The DLIAwards are open to accredited U.S.-based applicants in two categories: Institution Award, $100,000 to be awarded to up to three institutions that have showcased sustained innovation in the adoption and application of digital courseware that has resulted in improved undergraduate student success in gateway courses; and Faculty-Led Team Award, $10,000 to be awarded to up to 10 faculty teams that have excelled in advancing and adopting digital courseware with a strong pedagogical focus and a sustained impact on undergraduate student success in gateway courses. June 30: Science, technology, and math. Tulane University is accepting applications from entrepreneurs, researchers, and inventors for its Nitrogen Reduction Challenge. A $1-million cash prize will be awarded to the team that presents the best solution to reduce the amount of nitrogen entering the earth’s waters via fertilizer-laden runoff from farmlands. Such runoff is a leading cause of hypoxia, a deadly deficiency of oxygen that creates annual “Dead Zones” in the world’s lakes and oceans, killing marine life and threatening the economies of coastal regions, including the Gulf of Mexico. Up to five semi-finalists will be selected by November 2016 and provided a plot of farmland in northeast Louisiana to field test their innovation. The winning entry, which must maintain or increase agricultural yields while reducing nutrient runoff, will be selected by the Challenge Advisory Committee and awarded the grand prize in December 2017. July 8: Social and behavioral sciences. The W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research invites submissions for its annual prize for the best Ph.D. dissertation on employment-related issues. A first-place prize of $2,500 is being offered, and up to two honorable mention awards of $1,000 may also be given. The dissertation may come from any academic discipline, but it must have a substantial policy focus. June 1: Business/management (Faculty/Research). The Rutgers University School of Management and Labor Relations is accepting applications from doctoral and postdoctoral students and pre- and post-tenure scholars affiliated with U.S. institutions in business, management, the social sciences, and the humanities for the 2017-18 Kevin Ruble Fellowship in Conscious Capitalism. Scholars will conduct research on businesses and business leaders whose goal is to make a profit and further broader human values. The companies typically share ownership and profits with employees through ESOPs (Employee Stock Ownership Plans) and other approaches and engage in purposeful activities in order to enhance the well-being of other stakeholders and the environment. The fellowship can be used to fund a variety of studies including interviews with founders, case studies, the creation of datasets, employee and firm-level surveys, ethnographies, and other quantitative and qualitative studies. Stipends can be used for research and travel and are awarded typically for residence at the scholar’s home university. November 1: Humanities. The Institute for Advanced Study is accepting applications for scholar opportunities in 2017-18 at the School of Historical Studies. The school is open to all fields of historical research. Candidates of any nationality may apply for a single term or a full academic year. September 15: Professional fields. The Social Science Research Council and the Japan Center for Global Partnership present the Abe Fellowship for Journalists. The fellowship is open to citizens of the U.S. and Japan with at least five years of professional journalistic experience with newspapers, news magazines, wire services, and online news organizations. Freelancers are also eligible. Nationals of other countries must be permanent residents of the U.S. or Japan, or have a long-term affiliation with the American or Japanese journalistic communities. June 6: Health/medicine. The Administration for Children and Families (ACF), Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) intends to award up to three grants to support dissertation research on healthy marriage/responsible fatherhood policy issues (HMRF). These grants are meant to build capacity in the research field to focus research on questions that have direct implications for HMRF policy decision-making and program administration, and to foster mentoring relationships between faculty members and high-quality doctoral students. These grants are intended to address issues of significance to inform policy decisions and solutions, particularly for underserved/understudied populations (e.g., low-income families, minority populations), utilize rigorous research methodology (both primary data collection and secondary data analysis), and help inform the development of future intervention research. Humanities. The New Guard is accepting submissions for a new online component, BANG! Authors are showcased individually online for thirty days. Each author installment is made up of three pieces in any combination: poetry shorts (20 lines) or fiction or nonfiction (500 words each). Three prose pieces, for instance, could total 1,500 words max. Bang! pieces are not published in The New Guard. This book series aims to gather scholarly and creative writing on the African diaspora experience in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States.
