An amendment passed by the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday added language to a pending immigration bill that would extend federal student loans, work-study funds, and other federal support to students who are in the United States illegally.
Sen. Mazie K. Hirono, Democrat of Hawaii, introduced the amendment to the Senate’s proposed Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, S 744. The amendment, which passed on a voice vote, would extend federal Title IV benefits to people brought to the United States illegally before the age of 16, a group known as “Dreamers,” as well as those with provisional legal-immigrant status.
