Enrollment in Title IV Degree-Granting Institutions, by Sector and Region, Spring 2013

Overall enrollment decreased from the spring of 2012 to the spring of 2013, with the steepest drop in the for-profit sector. The region that saw the greatest decline was the Midwest.
Spring 2013 enrollment Change from prior year
Sector
Total enrollment, all sectors 19,105,651 -2.3%
4-year public 7,312,261 -1.1%
4-year private nonprofit 3,620,640 0.5%
4-year for-profit 1,347,238 -8.7%
2-year public 6,351,609 -3.6%
Unduplicated student headcount (all sectors) 18,766,884 -2.1%
Region
Midwest 3,976,063 -2.6%
Northeast 3,113,155 -0.9%
South 6,334,164 -2.2%
West 4,508,649 -1.7%

Note: Institutions reporting to the National Student Clearinghouse represent 95 percent of all enrollments at Title IV degree-granting institutions in the United States. The remaining enrollment was estimated, with weights applied to institutional sectors to better arrive at figures for all institutions nationally. Spring-term enrollments are based on data submitted to the clearinghouse by April 11 of each year, a cutoff date that captures 98.5 percent of the spring enrollments that will eventually be reported to the organization. Enrollments represent one student in one institution and thus would count twice a student enrolled simultaneously at two institutions. The unduplicated headcount provides the number of unique students with no double-counting. About 2 percent of total enrollment can be accounted for by students enrolling in more than one institution. Enrollment at institutions that span several states have been excluded from the regional totals. Less-than-two-year institutions have been aggregated with two-year institutions. Two-year for-profit and two-year private nonprofit institutions are not shown in the table because of small counts, but enrollments from those sectors are included in the overall totals.
