Use this interactive chart to view presidents’ pay in context. You can compare their total compensation or base salary against one of three institutional characteristics. Click a dot to see the president represented; for details on the president, follow the link to view that president’s detail page. Source: Compensation data were reported to The Chronicle’s compensation survey. Institutional data come from the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, or Ipeds. In the case of expenditures, the data are for the most recent year available at the time the salary data were gathered — usually the academic year preceding the compensation year.

A limited number of system offices report relevant data to Ipeds. Likewise, some system offices don’t report institutional data, such as average professor salaries or tuition and fees, to Ipeds. For chief executives who led a campus and a system jointly, the Ipeds data to which their pay is compared reflect data for only the main campus. Compensation data are for the 2018 calendar year.
