Fastest-Growing Colleges, 2007-17

Almanac 2019
August 18, 2019

Among the fastest-growing institutions are ones that have rapidly increased online enrollment, ones that were founded in the past few decades in anticipation of rising demand for higher education in their regions, ones that serve military students and veterans, and ones that have expanded their master’s-degree offerings. Four of the 10 fastest-growing public doctoral institutions were in Texas, as were two of the 10 fastest-growing public master’s institutions. The colleges were ranked by overall enrollment growth. The ones at the bottom of each list experienced enrollment decreases. They were included to offer an overall sense of enrollment changes that have affected colleges from 2007 to 2017.

* To make 2007 and 2017 enrollment figures comparable, this institution’s enrollment figure for 2007 was adjusted upward to include the enrollment of an affiliated institution or institutions. Such adjustments were made for institutions that combined since 2007, either through mergers or through reporting their enrollment together.

† The 2007 enrollments of Arizona State University campuses were adjusted from the original reported data to omit duplicate reporting of students who were enrolled at more than one system campus that fall. The adjusted 2007 figures in this table count students at the campus of their major.

Note: Data are based on a fall head count of full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students at U.S. degree-granting institutions that were eligible for Title IV federal financial aid and that had at least 500 students in 2007. Growth at some colleges reflects an increase in the number of online-only students. Colleges vary in whether they report enrollment of all campuses and programs together or separately. The analysis took into account changes in institutions’ reporting methods that could have affected their totals and made necessary adjustments when such changes were identifiable.

Institutions are grouped by the 2018 Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Institutions classified as two-year or four-year special-focus institutions and tribal colleges were omitted, as were for-profit colleges. Percentages are rounded, but institutions were ranked before rounding. Non-degree-or-certificate-seeking students are included in enrollment counts.

Fluctuations in the offering of short-term programs can have a significant impact on enrollment in some cases, as can transfer of programs from one campus of a multicampus system to another, demographic changes, and numerous other factors. Results should be interpreted with caution. Questions or comments on the Almanac should be sent to Ruth Hammond.

Correction (8/20/2019, 5:53 p.m.): The original version of this article incorrectly listed Georgia Military College as No. 1 among the fastest-growing public associate and associate/baccalaureate institutions. It was actually No. 18, and it grew by 80.5 percent over 10 years, not 666.0 percent. In this corrected table, the college’s 2007 enrollment figure was adjusted upward to 4,761, not 1,122, in order to include the 2007 enrollment of all six campuses that reported their enrollment together in 2017. Eastern Gateway Community College, in Ohio, has moved to the No. 1 spot in the public associate and associate/baccalaureate category. Rankings for institutions from No. 2 to No. 17 and the total 2007 enrollment for 952 institutions have also been adjusted.
