Federal Support for Research and Development, by Agency, FY 2016

More than half of the federal money spent by colleges on research and development in the 2016 fiscal year came from the Department of Health and Human Services. The Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation provided the next largest shares, with each accounting for more than $5 billion of spending.
