First-Time International Graduate Enrollment in U.S., by Selected Country or Region of Origin, Fall 2016

China sent more than a third and India sent just under a third of all international students who began master’s and graduate-certificate programs in the United States in the fall of 2016. But while China also accounted for more than a third of international students who began American doctoral programs, India sent only 12 percent.

Note: Data are based on responses from 395 institutions to a survey conducted in the fall of 2016. Percentages for Canada, Oceania, sub-Saharan Africa, and several Asian countries are excluded from the chart. More data are available at cgsnet.org/benchmarking.
