Public colleges with the highest percentages of particular racial or ethnic groups tended to be concentrated in states with relatively high representations of those groups in their populations. Oklahoma, for example, had five colleges among the top 10 nontribal colleges in the United States for representation of American Indians, and Georgia had five colleges among the top 10 non-historically-black colleges and universities for representation of blacks. The 10 institutions with the highest percentages of white students were dispersed among nine states.

Note: Full-time and part-time undergraduate students seeking either a degree or certificate at four-year public institutions in the United States in the fall of 2014 are represented in this table. Eight tribal colleges, all of which have an American Indian enrollment of at least 88 percent, and 39 historically black colleges and universities, nearly three-quarters of which have African-American enrollment of at least 80 percent, are excluded from the data. Percentages by race were calculated after students whose race was unknown and students who were nonresident aliens were excluded from the total number of students. Percentages are rounded, but institutions were ranked before rounding.
