Median Salaries of Senior College Administrators, 2015-16

For the first time in three years, administrative salaries are growing more quickly at private colleges than at public institutions, according to a survey released on Monday by the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources. At private institutions, the median base salary of senior administrators in 2015-16 rose by 2.2 percent, compared with an increase of 2 percent for public-college officials.

Over all, salary growth is down from the year before, when the median base-salary increase across public and private institutions was 2.4 percent.

The survey also found a continued gender imbalance in administrators’ salaries. In 12 of 15 executive positions included, men earned a higher median salary than women did. Women who work as chief financial officers, for example, make just 77 cents for every dollar their male peers bring in.
