To the Editor:
In Alexander C. Kafka’s recent article on Michelle Alexander (“Michelle Alexander’s Leap of Faith,” October 7), I was quoted as saying that Alexander’s “myopic focus on the War on Drugs diverts us from discussing violent crime.” I wrote those words in 2012 in response to Alexander’s argument in The New Jim Crow. In the years since the book’s publication, however, Alexander has made clear in numerous lectures and interviews that her critique of mass incarceration extends well beyond the drug war and includes an indictment of America’s overly harsh treatment of those charged with violent crimes. This perspective is far from myopic, and I share it.
