One-Year Changes in Support for Higher-Education Research-and-Development Spending, by Source of Funds, FY 2011 to FY 2016

In the 2016 fiscal year, federal support for research and development at higher-education institutions rose for the first time since 2011. The source of funds with the greatest increase in the 2016 fiscal year was nonprofit organizations, followed by institution funds.

Note: The data cover research-and-development spending by the 902 higher-education institutions that reported at least $150,000 in such spending in the 2016 fiscal year. Percentage changes in spending over the previous fiscal year are based on current dollars and were calculated using figures rounded to the nearest thousand. The category “all other sources” (beyond the ones shown above) is excluded. More data can be found here.
