Web Sites on Working Abroad
Alliance for International Educational and Cultural Exchange
The alliance promotes public policies that foster the growth of international- and cultural-exchange programs and publishes the International Exchange Locator: A Resource Directory for Educational and Cultural Exchange.
Association of Commonwealth Universities
The association’s Web site lists academic job opportunities in a variety of disciplines at universities in Commonwealth countries around the world. The job listings are updated twice a month and may be searched by geographical location, discipline, or keyword.
Boston College’s Center for International Higher Education
This site contains some useful links to international resources on the Internet.
Campus Review
This Australian newspaper is devoted to higher education down under.
The Chronicle of Higher Education
Comprehensive listings of academic jobs in the U.S. and abroad are published weekly.
Civic Education Project
C.E.P. is a nonprofit organization that promotes higher-education reform in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Its visiting-lecturer program places Western scholars with advanced degrees in the humanities or social sciences in teaching positions at institutions in the region for a full academic year.
Council for International Exchange of Scholars
The council administers the Fulbright Scholar Program. Its site features an index of stories by Fulbright scholars, in which former program participants share their experiences. A country-profile section is under construction.
Department for Education and Employment
The United Kingdom’s education department maintains a list of universities, colleges, and other organizations authorized by Royal Charter or by Act of Parliament to grant degrees.
Faculty Exchange Center
The center, at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, assists professors who are interested in exchanging jobs with colleagues in their discipline from institutions overseas. Faculty members are temporarily assigned to a host institution abroad but remain on the payroll of their home institution. The center publishes a directory of teaching exchanges that lists the names of interested professors, along with their institutions, ranks, and academic disciplines. It also publishes a housing-exchange directory. Each directory costs $35 if purchased separately, but the directories may be purchased together for $45.
Global Travel Press
This site is primarily for American K-12 teachers and teachers of English as a second language who work overseas. However, it has some useful links and information about living, working, and relocating to other countries.
Institute of International Education
A good source of information on teaching and studying abroad. I.I.E. has listings of international programs for students and teachers, as well as links to some international educational resources. It also administers the Fulbright Student Program.
NAFSA: Association of International Educators
This site has links to a host of international Internet resources.
The Times Higher Education Supplement
The British publication’s site is a good place to look for international academic jobs.
Transitions Abroad
The Web site of this bimonthly magazine is a good source of information, articles, and links to resources on living, working, and studying abroad. There’s also a discussion forum on working abroad.
University Affairs
This monthly online publication of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada lists a variety of faculty and administrative jobs at Canadian universities. The listings may be read in English or French.
Work Abroad: The Complete Guide to Finding a Job Overseas
A comprehensive guide to finding a job overseas, from the publishers of Transitions Abroad. The book costs $15.95, plus $4 shipping, and may be ordered online.
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
Unesco publishes reference books such as the International Handbook of Universities and Study Abroad, a guide to international higher-education study opportunities and scholarships. It also maintains the World Higher Education Database, which contains data on the higher-education systems of 180 countries.
University of Michigan International Center
This site has a fantastic section on overseas study, work, and travel opportunities with practical advice on working abroad, plus comprehensive lists of publications and Web sites related to international careers. Check out the page called, “Worldwide Teaching Abroad: K-12 and University.”
U.S. State Department Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs

This site, founded by John B. Bear, doesn’t list international resources and won’t help you get a job overseas. However, it just might help you to avoid diploma mills. Check the site periodically for the latest news on troubled or shady universities.

Escape Artist
This Web site, which is devoted to living abroad, has destination profiles, articles on overseas living, international job listings, and links to other international resources.
Expat Forum
This site was founded by HR International, a human-resources consulting firm that helps companies relocate employees abroad. It features 24 country-specific discussion areas, an international cost-of-living index, a list of guidebooks on overseas living, lists of time zones and international dialing codes, and links to a variety of international resources online.
Expat Exchange
This online discussion area for English-speaking expatriates was created in 1997. The site features articles and forums on topics such as moving overseas, health, taxes, and repatriation. There is also a jobs forum, where participants may post job openings and exchange advice about finding work abroad.
