Prank at U. of Minnesota Is Called Racist

Morris, Minnesota -- An assistant wrestling coach at the University of Minnesota’s campus here has resigned following a prank that some people labeled racist.

Several members of the wrestling team drove two black teammates to an off-campus location, where other wrestlers pretended to be white supremacists by putting pillowcases over their heads. One of the black wrestlers ran away and called 911 for help.

Chancellor David C. Johnson called the incident “abhorrent.” But Frank Pelegri, the former coach, said, “This was simply a prank.” He said he had gone along to make sure the joke didn’t get out of hand.

The two black students could not be reached for comment. The county sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
