Private Nonprofit 4-Year Institutions Reported Highest Graduation Rates in 2009

Across gender and racial groups, private nonprofit institutions reported the highest percentages of full-time, first-time students who earned bachelor’s degrees within six years of enrolling in the fall of 2003. Rates were significantly lower at for-profit colleges, where many students are educationally and financially disadvantaged. Rates for men and for black and Hispanic students also lagged.

Notes: Classification of institutions is according to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. “Research-intensive” includes institutions classified in that scheme as having “very high” or “high” research activity. Doctoral research universities award doctorate degrees but have lower research activity. Baccalaureate arts & sciences colleges award at least half of their bachelor’s degrees in the arts and sciences; baccalaureate diverse institutions award fewer than half of their bachelor’s degrees in those fields.
